Excerpt from a poem by Gemanuelle Magpantay, 8H
It’s like I’ve been holding on for a hundred years.
Years of facing terrible, never-ending fears.
The hundred years that feels so long,
Makes me drop my sense of feeling strong.
But one question to clear,
Is there hope anywhere near?
Hope to bring me to a happy place,
Hope to put a smile on my face.
But I forget that I do have a savior.
The one who is mighty and loves me forever.
His name is the Lord, God and King.
Who protects me from everything.
Asylum seekers, the words in the news,
The deaths on the boats, the lives that we lose,
They come from afar, from danger and fear,
But we send them away, we don’t want them here,
We don’t give help, ‘cause they come on a boat,
On leaky old things that are hardly afloat,
I know that we couldn’t just let them roam free,
But why we don’t help them right here I don’t see,
Do we not have compassion, do we not care,
This is a big problem and we need to be aware,
I know it’s illegal, the way that they come,
But why we don’t help them right here, it’s just
dumb,

Comparative Essay Excerpt by Emily Dawe 6EV
In ‘Once’, Felix is a boy who knows nothing of the Nazi threat. His parents, however, send him to the orphanage
because of just that. Felix thinks that things are just going bad for Jewish booksellers and they have to move for
better business. Sadly, this is not the case. During ‘Once’, Felix starts to understand what is going on around him
and learns how dangerous the world is around him.
In ‘Then’, the sequel to ‘Once’, everything in Felix’s world has changed. There are Nazis everywhere and you never
know who you can trust. Felix and Zelda, a young girl who he saved from a burning house, have found refuge in
a kind lady’s farmhouse. Genia is a Polish farmer who risks her life for Felix and Zelda. Genia dislikes Nazis and
comes up with fake identities to hide Felix and Zelda. Felix becomes Wilhelm, a Polish boy whose parents have
been killed in the bombing, and Zelda becomes Violetta, Wilhelm’s sister. They have to bleach their hair to disguise
themselves.
Family is like flowers blooming in Spring,
Lovely and makes people happy.
They are bright and colourful and stand out.
Maybe not everyone sees my family like this.
But I know one little girl is always watching.

Through the canopy the noise can be heard
Up and above, bringing music to the world
Bringing joy to the children who are near
Happiness and Peace to the people who hear
