My City
Canberra is
good kind people
the beautiful lake
the lovely drifting waves
kangaroos in the outback
and crickets and preying mantises
pink flowers at the fair
and daisies like the sun
the sounds of birds twittering in the trees
and cucawing magpies
the smells of flowers in the garden
I love this lovely place
It’s such a good place for me

The Beginning
The birds were twittering as they flew in the sky
Ngunnawal aborigines ran by and by
They hunted for animals collecting wild berries
While fortunate people ate mangoes and cherries
The campfire blazed and the smoke drifted out
The chubby, brown children came running about
They soon had their meal and settled to sleep
In the comfort and safety of people who are free
In the time of the white man Canberra became
A place which was new, different, not the same
The design was complex, with difference and style
Canberra would be seen from over a mile
The hills rolling sweetly, lakes shimmer in the sun
This life was beautiful but the work was not done
They created, they built, they hammered and sawed
It was gradually turning into a place to adore
Canberra now lives as Australia’s capital
The children run round, though men still in battle
The Government is trying to serve us well
We have shops all around trying to sell
Biscuits and chocolates and lollies and cakes
The teams are all going out with their mates
It’s a safe place to live, no bombs and no mines
It’s one of the best places you’ll ever find
But the future to come for our people who are free
Is something to look forward to, just wait and see
We cannot be sure what will eventually happen
But we do know it will be exciting, this area will fatten
Canberra is changing, it’s thrilling, it’s fun
But as I said before, it’s only just begun
