Dance Festival - 19th September 2013
Festival theme - 100 Dreams to celebrate the 100th Birthday of Canberra.
Set to the music, ‘Canberra’, by award winning composer Rachel Gaudry, our
dance....’Metamorphosis of the Capital’ is a contemporary dance inspired by the
relationship of land, place, people, dreams and change.
As we developed the dance...words began to take flight in my imagination....
A bogon moth – Awakened, disturbed
Out of the darkness it appears – Elegant, agile
Calm land, silent trees. Whispering wind and plains of lime stone – untouched
Dancing landscapes of precious creatures evolving.
Then fighting between sisters – Melbourne, Sydney – Canberra forms
Untouched limestone becomes disrupted; land now a ground for building
Walter Burley Griffen - a man with a vision of success
Open space with shadowing trees
Close communities yet order among us – The capitol
Grass is flattened and shadows creep in; Cogs turn and twist – Whine and hiss
American – Australian memorial, Lake Burley Griffin fountain, Telstra tower
Parliament House – Iconic features forming;
Though the land is not forgotten. Trees are planted, scattered.
Natural landscapes preserved with strong connections in surroundings.
People come together with the buildings and the land
Cooperation, connection
Businessmen walk, work, wonder
Military scout, serve, protect
Children play, run, ride
And celebrations, parties, people, events
Canberra comes together ever evolving – forever changing
100 years centenary – 100 years of dreams.
