In PK this year, the children have had the
blessing of the LLL program (Literacy for
Little Learners). This program was
established originally in the ELC at
Lyneham and is now being taught on the
Charnwood campus with this year’s first
PK group of children. The phonics based
program teaches children to read and
write through the instruction of letter
sounds (phonics) and play based teaching.
The theme of the program is that teaching
should be dynamic, relevant and fun.
Mrs. Cathy’s lessons combine dance, songs,
rhymes, movement, games and
handwriting practice all in one. The idea
behind this type of lesson is to encourage
the children to listen and focus on each
task that is set. As the year goes on the
children require less assistance in
listening and become more and more
independent in their own learning.
Through this program children gain
knowledge and skills that aid children in
other areas of their development, which in
turn sets them up for a more successful
experience in Kindergarten.
