Over the last 2 weeks, students created documentaries, digital 3D models, diaries and sculptures. Some even tasted as good as they looked! Students were given the creative task to produce a piece of work either digitally or physically to portray an aspect of life in the Angkor/Khmer Empire. During their final HASS lesson of the semester, students took the opportunity to demonstrate how much they have learned about the empire by showcasing their creations. Mrs Cloete and Mrs White were impressed by how creative students were in working to their particular strengths and style of learning. Well done students for a fantastic end to a wonderful semester of learning!

Commemoration to mark Battle for Australia

Senior School and Middle School students attended the 2014 Battle for Australia Commemoration National Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial on Wednesday 3rd September. This annual wreath-laying ceremony brings together ex-service men and women, family and friends to commemorate the service and sacrifice of all those who served during the Battle for Australia. The wreath-laying commemorates the service and sacrifice of all those who served in defence of Australia in 1942 and 1943 during a period when our nation appeared to face its greatest peril. The first Wednesday in September was chosen because it marks the first significant defeat of Japanese forces on land in the Battle of Milne Bay in 1942.

Year 5 “Remember”

Students in Year 5 lent their voices to the Australian War Memorial’s Remember Me project. During Library time students recorded the names of Australians who died during the First World War. These recordings will be played in the First World War section of the cloisters in the Commemorative area of the Australian War Memorial. More than 62,000 Australians lost their lives during World War One and each of them will be remembered in this Roll of Honour Soundscape. Each student was given a brief biography of the soldier whose name they recorded. Two students, Hannah Passlow and Penelope Amoore, were thrilled to be able to record the names of their own relatives who fought and died. Thanks to Mrs Rachel Richards and Mrs Kate Wainwright for your help in organising this special opportunity.

Rather than simply explore the ‘Age of Discovery’ in a HASS book this term, Year 4 dressed in costume, created posters, displayed objects and prepared speeches to bring to life their “Living Wax Museum Character”. Explorers like Christopher Columbus, Henry Hudson, Jeanne Baret, Isabelle Eberhardt, Vasco Da Gama, Lady Hester Stanhope and John Cartier were just some of the wax-work figures that came alive when viewers pushed their “Start Button”. Each wax-museum character presented a 1 min talk describing the times, places and reasons they left their homes to discover new and interesting lands. Thank you to parents for their amazing efforts.
