Commemoration to mark Battle for Australia

Senior School and Middle School students attended the 2014 Battle for Australia Commemoration National Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial on Wednesday 3rd September. This annual wreath-laying ceremony brings together ex-service men and women, family and friends to commemorate the service and sacrifice of all those who served during the Battle for Australia. The wreath-laying commemorates the service and sacrifice of all those who served in defence of Australia in 1942 and 1943 during a period when our nation appeared to face its greatest peril. The first Wednesday in September was chosen because it marks the first significant defeat of Japanese forces on land in the Battle of Milne Bay in 1942.

Social Media & FOMO - The Fear of Missing Out

I have had a number of conversations with senior school families recently about use of social media and it has prompted me to write on the topic. I know that a significant number of our families regularly 'battle' with their children surrounding this very topic. I regularly field questions surrounding appropriate usage of social media and if I had a dollar for every time a parent commented on social media being the cause for issues with the youth of today, I would be a wealthy man.

Year 4 Living Wax Museum

Rather than simply explore the ‘Age of Discovery’ in a HASS book this term, Year 4 dressed in costume, created posters, displayed objects and prepared speeches to bring to life their “Living Wax Museum Character”. Explorers like Christopher Columbus, Henry Hudson, Jeanne Baret, Isabelle Eberhardt, Vasco Da Gama, Lady Hester Stanhope and John Cartier were just some of the wax-work figures that came alive when viewers pushed their “Start Button”. Each wax-museum character presented a 1 min talk describing the times, places and reasons they left their homes to discover new and interesting lands. Thank you to parents for their amazing efforts.
